Project overview
We recently completed a raised multi-tier composite decking project at a residential property in Corfe Mullen, Dorset.
The deck bridges the height difference between the house and the lowered garden below, using a series of tiers and steps to create a practical, connected outdoor space. A bespoke aluminium cable balustrade runs the full perimeter, topped with a Jatoba hardwood handrail.
The views from the deck look out over open Dorset countryside and mature trees.
Key Project Highlights:

A Multi-Tier Layout Designed Around the Site
The site presented a significant level change between the rear of the house and the garden. Rather than losing that space, we designed a multi-tier deck that works with the slope.
A main deck platform extends out from the house. Steps lead down to a lower tier, which then connects to the garden below. The layout gives the homeowner distinct zones for different uses while keeping the transition between house and garden straightforward.
The composite decking boards run consistently across all levels, tying the whole structure together visually.
A Balustrade Built for the Long Term
The balustrade is aluminium with stainless steel cable running horizontally between the posts. The top rail is Jatoba hardwood, chosen for its density and its warm reddish-brown tone against the grey composite boards.
Aluminium does not rust or corrode. The cable infill keeps the structure open, so the views over the countryside are unobstructed from the deck. The Jatoba cap rail adds a natural contrast and is hard-wearing enough to handle outdoor conditions without constant maintenance.
The combination works practically and looks considered without relying on off-the-shelf components.

A Subframe Built to Last Indefinitely
The subframe is UC4 pressure-treated timber, supported on steel ground anchors concreted into the ground. No timber makes direct contact with the soil. This matters because ground contact is the primary cause of timber decay. By keeping all structural timber off the ground, the subframe will not rot.
UC4 is the highest grading of timber treatment available for outdoor use. Combined with the steel anchor system, the structure beneath the deck is as durable as the boards on top.
The result is a raised deck that does not need ongoing structural attention. The materials do the work.
