Raised Composite Deck with Stainless Steel and Glass Balustrade – Parkstone, Dorset

Project overview

We recently completed a raised composite decking project at a residential property in Parkstone, Dorset.

The deck sits at first-floor level, extending out from the rear of the house and looking out over the garden below. Stainless steel posts with a round tube top rail run the full perimeter, with toughened glass infill panels fitted between the posts. Stone stairs lead from garden level up to the deck, integrating the existing landscaping with the new structure.

Note: the photos shown were taken prior to the glass infill panels being installed.

A Raised Platform That Works with the Garden

The site drops away from the rear of the house, which made a raised deck the natural solution for creating usable outdoor space at the level of the house.

The deck extends out from the property, giving the homeowner a practical outdoor area directly accessible from inside. The existing stone stairs were retained as the main route between the deck and the garden, keeping the character of the original landscaping intact.

The Deckorators Venture composite boards in a warm grey tone complement the brick and render of the house without competing with it.

Stainless Steel and Glass for an Open Finish

The balustrade uses brushed stainless steel posts with a round tube top rail. Toughened glass panels sit between the posts, keeping the perimeter safe without blocking the view out over the garden.

Stainless steel is well suited to outdoor use in coastal and near-coastal locations like Parkstone. It does not corrode under normal conditions and needs no maintenance beyond occasional cleaning.

The round tube rail gives a clean, unfussy profile. The glass infill keeps the structure visually open while providing full perimeter safety at height.

A Subframe Built to Last Indefinitely

As with our other raised deck projects, the subframe uses UC4 pressure-treated timber supported on steel ground anchors concreted into the ground. No timber makes direct contact with the soil.

This approach eliminates the primary cause of structural timber decay. UC4 is the highest available grade of timber treatment for outdoor use, and the steel anchor system means the posts are held firmly without relying on the ground to take any moisture-related risk.

The result is a subframe that will not need replacing and does not require the deck to be lifted for maintenance.
