Project Overview
In this Wimborne, Dorset project, our client sought to rejuvenate their outdoor space with a deck that not only provided functionality but also harmonised with the natural curves of their existing garden features. We designed and constructed a custom curved deck using pressure treated UC4 Redwood softwood decking boards, complete with a wrap-around curved step. The result is an elegant and inviting outdoor area that enhances the natural beauty of the garden and blends seamlessly with its architectural elements.
To achieve the elegant curved design, we saturated the deck boards with water and then steamed them used our bespoke board steamers to ensure a perfect curved finish with no cracks, back-board cuts or other weaknesses being introduced into the boards. Why the Old Decking Needed Replacement
As seen in the before images, the previous decking had become dry, chipped, and generally lifeless. This deterioration is a common issue when a deck isn’t properly maintained with regular oiling. Just like moisturising your skin to keep it healthy, wooden decking needs to be treated with oil to replenish its natural oils and maintain its rich, vibrant appearance. Without this care, the wood’s natural oils dry out, leading to cracking, splitting, and a dull, weathered look.
In this case, due to years of neglect, simply treating the wood with penetrating oils or painting over the old decking wouldn’t have been enough to restore its original beauty. Additionally, the straight-line design of the old decking did not complement the organic curves of the garden’s paving slabs, creating a disjointed and uninviting space.
Why Redwood Softwood Decking Was the Right Choice
UC4 pressure-treated Redwood softwood was the ideal material for this project, not only because of its natural beauty and strength but also for its flexibility in achieving the desired curved design. Redwood is rich in natural oils that offer protection against decay and insects, making it a durable choice for outdoor installations.
The new decking’s rich, warm tones now harmonise with the greenery and other natural elements of the garden, while the curved design adds a dynamic visual element that enhances the overall aesthetic.
