Project overview
We recently completed a striking raised balcony decking project for a family home in Lilliput, Poole, using premium Jatoba hardwood decking boards.
The deck creates a beautifully defined outdoor space extending from the second-storey balcony, with a set of integrated stairs leading down into the garden below. The rich, deep red tones of the Jatoba hardwood bring warmth and character to the property, transforming what was previously a simple outdoor area into a welcoming place to relax.
One of the standout qualities of Jatoba hardwood is how it responds to the weather. When dry, the boards showcase elegant natural grain patterns and a refined finish. When wet, the colour deepens dramatically, with rainwater enhancing the vibrancy of the wood and revealing the striking texture within the grain.
The finished result is a sophisticated yet practical balcony deck that adds both visual appeal and everyday usability to this family home.
Key Project Highlights:

Elevated Design with Seamless Garden Access
The raised balcony layout creates a natural extension of the home’s upper level while maintaining an easy connection to the garden below.
A set of carefully integrated stairs leads down from the balcony decking into the garden, allowing the space to function as a practical everyday access point as well as a place to unwind. The elevated position also helps define the outdoor living area, creating a comfortable spot for morning coffee, evening drinks, or simply relaxing outside.
The clean lines of the deck structure keep the design modern and uncluttered while allowing the natural beauty of the hardwood to take centre stage.
Premium Jatoba Hardwood with Rich Natural Character
Jatoba hardwood is known for its exceptional durability and distinctive colour, and this project highlights exactly why it’s such a sought-after decking material.
The boards feature deep reddish tones that give the deck a warm, luxurious feel. The natural grain patterns add visual texture, creating subtle variations across the surface that make every board unique.
An especially beautiful feature of this timber is how it reacts to moisture. After rainfall, the boards darken slightly and the water enhances the depth of colour and grain, giving the deck an even richer appearance.
This combination of strength, longevity, and visual warmth makes Jatoba an excellent choice for high-quality hardwood decking.

A Durable Structure Built for Long-Term Performance
Beneath the hardwood boards sits a robust structural system designed for strength and longevity.
The deck was built using a UC4-treated structural subframe combined with Plas-Pro recycled plastic components, providing excellent resistance to moisture and long-term environmental exposure. To complement this, stainless steel fixings were used throughout the installation to ensure long-lasting structural integrity without the risk of corrosion.
This carefully engineered foundation ensures the deck remains stable, secure, and durable for years to come - allowing the homeowners to enjoy their elevated outdoor space with minimal maintenance.
