Project Overview:
This project involved the complete overhaul of an old, weathered hardwood deck that had been in place for 17 years and required frequent maintenance. The client wanted a low-maintenance, long-lasting solution that would seamlessly blend with the property and its surroundings.
The solution? A modern composite deck using Storm Decorators Venture composite decking boards in Sandbar colour, paired with a custom timber handrail to maintain a warm, traditional touch.
Old Deck Replacement
The existing hardwood deck had served the client for 17 years but had become a high-maintenance feature, requiring regular attention to preserve its appearance and prevent deterioration. As the years passed, the deck’s condition worsened, and it no longer aligned with the client’s vision for a functional, aesthetically pleasing outdoor space. A decision was made to replace the hardwood with composite decking, ensuring durability and a significant reduction in ongoing upkeep.
Subframe and Structural Durability
A strong foundation was essential to ensure the long-term durability of the new deck. The subframe was constructed using UC4 pressure-treated joists, which are designed to resist decay and maintain structural integrity in outdoor environments. Additionally, we used Plaspro recycled plastic posts for ground contact areas, completely eliminating the risk of rot and extending the lifespan of the deck. These sustainable materials contributed to the deck’s overall durability and low-maintenance appeal.
Composite Decking Selection
The client chose Venture composite decking in Sandbar colour, a light, neutral tone that perfectly complements the surrounding garden and the color palette of the property. Composite decking offers many advantages over traditional wood, such as excellent resistance to weathering, splintering, and fading, making it an ideal low-maintenance solution for outdoor living spaces. This particular composite decking design combined modern functionality with an organic appearance, achieving the perfect balance for the space.
Bespoke Timber Handrail
To complement the contemporary composite decking, we installed a bespoke timber handrail that added warmth and character to the design. The handrail provides both safety and a visual connection to the traditional elements of the property, striking the perfect balance between modern and timeless aesthetics. This decking idea not only enhanced functionality but also introduced a touch of elegance to the space.
Summary of the project
One of the key challenges in this project was transitioning from the weathered hardwood deck to a modern composite material while maintaining harmony with the property’s more traditional elements. The Sandbar-coloured decking was chosen specifically for its ability to blend naturally with the home’s existing features, while the custom timber handrail tied the design together, creating a unified and sophisticated look.
