Project Overview:
In this project for Rob and Jane in Verwood, Dorset, we were tasked with transforming their patio and garden area into a more accessible and functional outdoor living space.
The house, with its Victorian-style architecture, required a decking solution that would blend seamlessly with the property’s traditional aesthetic while offering modern functionality and style.
We achieved this by using UC4 treated softwood redwood grooved timber decking boards and a bespoke glass handrail, creating an elegant and rustic deck that enhances the natural beauty of the garden.
Key Project Highlights:
Built on solid foundations
We constructed the subframe using UC4 pressure-treated timber combined with Plaspro recycled plastic posts. This standard framing provides a strong, long-lasting foundation that prevents timber from coming into contact with the ground, thereby reducing the risk of rot and extending the lifespan of the deck.
We top the wooden joists with waterproof deck tape, which allows water to run off easily, further extending the durability of these already exceptionally resilient wooden joists.
UC4 Treated Softwood Redwood Decking:
The rustic charm of redwood timber was the perfect choice for this project, aligning beautifully with the Victorian aesthetic of Rob and Jane’s home. The softwood boards, treated for durability and weather resistance, feature a grooved texture that adds both character and functionality to the deck.
The natural tones and rustic appeal of the redwood complement the traditional style of the home while ensuring longevity with minimal maintenance. The subtle streaks of soft pink add a modern and vibrant highlight to match the glass balustrade and modern-style conservatory, whilst not being over the top and taking away from the Victorian aesthetic of the home.
Seamless Flow from Conservatory to Garden:
The deck was designed to create a gentle step from the conservatory extension, ensuring a smooth transition from the house into the garden. This gentle step enhances the flow between indoor and outdoor spaces, making it easier for the clients to access their garden while enjoying the extended living area.
By extending their patio with the redwood timber decking, we created a spacious outdoor living area for Rob and Jane to relax and entertain. The deck extends into a beautiful boardwalk, guiding them out toward their landscaped garden, which serves as a peaceful retreat. This extension provides both practicality and aesthetic appeal, offering a versatile outdoor space that blends with the existing architecture.
Custom Lighting for Evening Ambiance
To enhance the functionality of the deck during the evening, we installed custom lighting that adds both safety and ambience. The lighting not only ensures the space is well-lit and safe for use after dark, but it also highlights the natural beauty of the timber and the garden beyond.
The soft glow from the lights enhances the rustic charm of the redwood while providing a subtle, modern touch that makes the deck a versatile space for both day and night. Whether Rob and Jane are hosting guests or simply relaxing outdoors in the evening, the custom lighting transforms the deck into a cosy and functional extension of their home.
Summary of the project
This project in Verwood, Dorset, transformed Rob and Jane’s outdoor space into a stunning and functional area that perfectly complements their Victorian-style home. The redwood grooved timber decking provides a rustic, natural aesthetic, while the bespoke glass handrail adds a modern touch without obstructing the garden views. By extending their patio and creating a seamless flow from their conservatory, we delivered a versatile and beautiful outdoor space where they can relax and enjoy their landscaped garden.
This project demonstrates how thoughtful design and material selection can create a harmonious blend of tradition and modernity, offering both aesthetic appeal and long-lasting functionality.
